Little Richie Zeeman stood at the rail to the Grey Wolf exhibit and stared.

He watched them sleep, eat and pace, ever watchful. He loved biology and science and had been reading up on the Canis Lupus.

A large male, colored with amber, lay on a high rock and watched him, his giant front paws crossed. The pads on the feet were a source of great fascination to Richard. They had glands there, and could mark territory wherever they scratched.

They did it to protect their pack. To protect their mates.

Even at ten years old, Richard understood the concept.
