It was rare to be at Ted’s house for a whole evening.

After Riker’s, Peter had no further interest in the mysteries that surrounded his future stepfather. But now some time had passed: Ted was home from the hospital, and curiosity had peeked again.

After dinner, Ted had disappeared when his pager had gone off during dessert.

Unnoticed, Peter followed him.

It was a back room that he’d never seen. The door was ajar. Ted’s voice was low. It was a one-sided conversation. But Peter got the gist.

“Anita. It’s Edward. Yes, I got your message… I miss you, too.”
