It was Becca’s seventh birthday party and the highlight of this gray Saturday afternoon was a scavenger hunt.

And whose job was it to chaperone the gaggle of girls?

Edward’s.

He watched from the sidewalk as they rang each doorbell, looking for items.

Blue paperclips. Cheesecloth. Red yarn. Orange candles.

Such mundane things. Was this the life of a hitman? Had he really been reduced to playing bodyguard for a seven year old?

Christ, he was even carrying a gun.

He stared off down the little suburban street, and wondered what Anita would think if she could see him now.
