Challenge: Jason throws a party at Anita’s house.

“Starlight” (Blackout! #1)

Two lawn chairs and an old AM/FM radio were set up on Anita’s back deck. Jason lay in one chair. Nathaniel in the other. They let the music and starlight wash over them.

Nathaniel was content. Jason was bored.

Suddenly, a ripple went through the night air and Jason sat up. “You feel that?”

“Yeah. Weird.”

The music died, followed by an abrupt announcement:

“ – Warning is for all St. Louis counties – a citywide blackout has occurred – no word yet on damage or repair.”

Nathaniel saw Jason smile in the dark. “Uh-oh. What are you thinking?”

“Blackout party at Anita’s!”

“Blacklight” (Blackout! #2)

“This tiny radio isn’t gonna work for our musical needs!” Jason grumbled.

“Caleb’s here with the generator!” Zane called as he relocated the couch out of the living room.

Cherry finished lighting the candles. “What’s the point of a generator when it’s a ‘blackout’ party??”

“We gotta have music and blacklight, Cherry.”

She tipped her head to peer into the kitchen where Jason’s stripper friends he’d invited were mixing drinks. “Anita’s gonna kill us.”

Just then, Caleb got the generator working with Anita’s stereo – ‘Disturbed’ blasted out of the speakers to much cheering.

“Hey!” Zane hollered, perturbed. “Where’s ‘Sister Sledge’?!?”

“Flashlight” (Blackout! #3)

Brighton Cemetery sat on a hilltop that overlooked the valley. Anita was working three raisings and was in the middle of the second when the citylights below vanished.

She lit a candle and continued. The zombie didn’t seem to mind.

Between clients, she found her way back to her car. She grabbed a flashlight out of the trunk and switched on her car radio. The news was on:

They were saying it wasn’t just a grid outage – the authorities suspected major foul play.

She hoped her last client arrived quick. She wanted to get home and check on the leopards…

“Headlights” (Blackout! #4)

When Anita eased down her long driveway, she saw cars parked everywhere, music blaring from her darkened house.

As she slammed the car door and took two steps, a pair of headlights blinded her. She went for her Browning.

The glare dimmed to parking ambers and a blonde head was halloed there.

“Edward. What the hell are you doing here?”

“Babysitting.”

“You look like hell.”

“It’s a tough job.”

Moments passed. Then she put the pieces together.  “You’re responsible for the blackout, aren’t you?!”

“…I helped.”

She shook her head, facing homeward. Right now, she had smaller fish to fry…

“Candlelight” (Blackout! #5) Anita’s POV…

The strippers were harder to intimidate than the leopards. But eventually, I kicked all their asses out.

And threatened Jason for good measure. He’d owed up to the whole thing. It didn’t change the fact that my house was a disaster.

My living room was now re-decorated in dance floor chic.

I followed a trail of candles to the guest bathroom where a tub of ice, gin and Kool-Aid sat happily staining my new porcelain. I put my head in my hands.

That’s how Edward found me. He leaned against the doorway, smiling nonchalantly. “Can we kill the monsters now?”
